Grand Prize – Bourbon Hunter’s Prize!
Anyone who has the most passing acquaintance with bourbon knows the
name of Van Winkle. It is the most notorious of all whiskeys on the market. The
line is available in a special release once a year, in limited collections, allocated
(which is to say rationed) carefully across the country.
Bourbon hunters have gone to legendary lengths for even the chance to buy
these whiskeys. On the secondary market, connoisseurs and spendthrifts all
pay dear prices for a single bottle.
Dunwoody Rotary is exceptionally fortunate to have one of these very special
bottles as our grand prize.
Also included is a $450 private tasting for four people at ShortBarrel.
The Highlands and Smoke Prize
We combine two of the major regions famous for their scotch whisky.
Presenting first is a scotch from the Highlands region, renowned equally for their temperamental character and distilleries often born from rebels flouting the crown and its taxes. The Dalmore distillery is well-regarded by scotch enthusiasts and is located near the famous town of Inverness, just before the
Highlands become truly inaccessible. It’s rich soil yields barley to this day grown for their malt and bears the combination of smoke and sea. Just north of Dalmore lies the equally famous Glenmorangie distillery, also lying aside the sea, but considered of gentler character than its boisterous Highlands
brethren. For the true scotch enthusiast, nothing sings of smoke and sea like Islay scotch whisky. Of these, the Lagavulin distillery delivers the perfect blend of sweet,
salt, and peat that somehow combine to mesmerize whisky lover across the world.
Dunwoody Rotary will award the lucky recipient of this prize an unparalleled gift of mountain, sea, and smoke.
Also included is a $150 gift certificate to Thos. O'Reilly Public House
The tiny Spey River valley—or Speyside—is a tiny region in Scotland, which itself is a tiny region that provides their whisky to a thirsty world. Nearly two-thirds of all scotch distilleries are located in this valley. All of the most
famous single malts and blends find much of their source from this Scottish valley.
Glenlivet is the first legally licensed scotch distillery to this day. Its name has been stolen and copied multiple times over as its whisky has become famous across the world. To this day, anyone from first class in an airplane to
celebrating at the 19th hole after a good round will call for Glenlivet. It is the pinnacle example of single malt scotch: smooth, approachable, and rich. Dewar’s is equally famous for their blends being one of the very first to selectively blend and bottle different lots for particular tastes. To this day, Speyside whisky often serves as bases for blends the world over where the intense smoke and flavor of single malt is tempered by softer grains. Where the peat reek of the highlands might be the front-man for a famous rock band, Speyside and their blends serve as the rhythm section that make the backing for some of the greatest whiskies in the world. Dunwoody Rotary offers two expressions that embody this family.
Also included is a $140 gift certificate to Gate City / Artillery Room.
European immigrants to early America enthusiastically continued their old world traditions of distilling and quickly adopted the local grains of corn and rye (as well as apple and molasses for brandy and rum). Their own traditions and styles quickly developed into brands that centuries later rival some of the
best that Britain or anyone else can produce.
Dunwoody Rotary offers four selections representing this storied group. The first two are from Buffalo Trace Distillery. While Jim Beam may sell more bourbon than anyone else in the world, no other distillery produces as many decorated and acclaimed bourbons as Buffalo Trace. Two examples of bourbon—the “high rye” recipe featuring corn and rye grain, and the accompanying “wheated” bourbon where the rye is swapped for wheat. But,
all American whiskey must ultimately answer to the top-selling whiskey of the world, which is Jack Daniels, featuring its signature Tennessee method of mellowing and sweetening the bourbon-like grain bill. Lastly, standing
insolently in the group of Americans, is the bottle of Jameson, aged in American Oak barrels that once held bourbon. It is true that every bottle of Jameson has just a little American bourbon in it. Jameson represents the top-selling whiskey in the world, bar none.
Dunwoody Rotary offers the Original Guard of American whiskey: each a titan in the industry representing the most classic styles.
Also included is a $100 gift certificate to Iron Hill Brewery.
Following the evil times of Prohibition, spirits distillation—like beer—faced a dark age of macro-level producers filling in the gap that was left in the wake of unnumbered smaller, family-owned distilleries. No more! The late 1990s and the turn of the century saw an explosion of craft distillery movements with
innovative styles erupting across the country.
Whiskey is a time-consuming, expensive, and fickle spirit to make, standing in stark contrast to the quickly and easily produced moonshine and vodka. It takes years, and the impatient are always penalized. In this group, we offer selections from two Pacific Northwest distilleries now standing to rival the more storied brands from the similar climates of Scotland. The barley grown in the Pacific Northwest feeds both the Westward and the
Westland brands. Far to the south in Texas, we offer the flagship product of Garrison Brothers, featuring their own estate-grown corn grain in their bourbon. And lastly, we offer a selection from Atlanta’s very own Old Fourth Ward Distillery.
Collectively, these distilleries all represent different venues of the new, craft styles of distilling emerging from all corners of the country!
Also included is a $50 gift certificate to Culinary Dropout.
Ambrosia drunk every night would soon lose its savor. And no one should rush headlong into collector whiskeys... a person should walk before they run. In honor of that idea and in celebration of the common man laboring in the
middle class, Dunwoody Rotary offers as their final prize the “bar starter” kit. A selection of bottles that would proudly and dutifully serve in any bar for any cocktail. A tour of the world, it features a tequila from Mexico, a rum from
Barbados, a classic London dry gin, and a Russian vodka. Aristotle himself observed that a perfect society is one in which the middle
class is in control and outnumbers both of the other classes. Here, Dunwoody Rotary offers stalwart selections representing exactly that idea of perfection.
Also included is a $50 gift certificate to Dunwoody Tavern, a wine picnic basket, and a Whiskey Drinking Kit.
